VENUE REVIEWS: Hotel Utah

The Hotel Utah Saloon is situated at 500 Fourth Street. You can call the bar on (415) 546-6300, or fax them on (415) 546-0441. Their website is at Really Long Link The Hotel Utah provides drinks, food, and music. It opens from 11-30am-2am Mon-Fri, and 1pm-2am Sat-Sun. The happy hour is on from 4-8pm mon-fri. There is a large TV screen for those wanting to catch the Giants' games. Pabst Blue Ribbon costs $2 per pint. Parties are catered for.


Food is available from 11-30am-11pm Mon-Fri, and 1pm-10-30pm Sat-Sun. You can get a free appetizer if you buy 2 drinks between 4-8pm Mon-Fri. The menu includes salads, fries, wings, Utah's Famous Hummus, the Utah Burger (with Utah sauce), sandwiches of chicken, cheese, or tuna, shepherd's pie, macaroni 'n' cheese, quesadilla, and pizza. Prices range from $3 for a bowl of soup to a little over $10 - most meals costing $7-9. Sunday dinners are priced at $8.

The building was built in 1908. It was originally opened by the Deininger family, who served Fredericksburg beer. Historically, The Hotel Utah has been a known haunt for theives, gamblers, metalsmiths, furniture makers, poets, hustlers, prostitutes, politicians, gangsters, and goldseekers, amongst others. Al Opatz took over The Hotel Utah in the fifties/sixties, and had a penchant for chopping off the tie of anyone he found wearing one in his establishment. It became known as Al’s Transbay Tavern in 1966. in 1977 the venue was renamed The Utah, when taken over by Paul Gaer. At this time, a stage was incorporated into the design and local music was first introduced. Also, writers, artists, and comedians were catered for. Among the famed to visit The Utah, you will find Bing Crosby, Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams, and Marilyn Monroe.
