THE BAD HAND CD REVIEW: IN THIS LINE WISH YOU HAPPINESS
November 12th 2008 16:14
You never know what you'll hear with these guys & I love that. The surprises amongst the music in this CD include a harmonica, banjo, and what sounds like trodden on beer cans. This compilation is primarily instrumental, though the odd vocal pops in, with the music or afterward.
YOUR SMELL IS YOUR NAME: A whirring intro leads into a blast of musical sounds. There is enough melody to be called a tune, and enough miscellaneous sound to be called an experience on this track.
?DOG EES ESEEG OD: A gentle intro soon builds up into a powerful instrumental. Ones imagination is tricked continuously, as soon as one picture appears, the pace changes or the volume alters, so you have to begin to imagine once again. Listen to this track several times before attempting to dance along! Just when you think you might have the right idea, up comes a spiraling whistle to make you change your sway-pace.
RUINOUS FLESHPETAL SECRETS: A soft tuneful start leads into a harmonica enriched glide of string pickings.
FIRST "THAT SONG," THEN "LO HA," NOW THIS…: Entering on cymbals, a powerful combo is soon lightened by high tones - and you can catch a voice in there! Noises akin to crinkled cellophane paper, much pace-changing and a variety of beer can sound effects keep the track entertaining.
PLS ANSWER UR PHONE: A fast and fizzy start leads to trips and tinkles, and then a squeak leads onward. This would be my favorite track from the CD. I particularly like the heavy drum thuds accompanied by twang and harmonica play. The track ends on a boom-vox. (Ribster the pigeon highly approves of this track, too. He sat on the windowsill outside and settled down to listen along.)
MD12: High tinkles over deep power sounds in a musicscape. Once partially confused, by a piano roll, one becomes more so by piano whirlies and what appears to be a banjo. By now, two more pigeons had landed on my windowsill - they kept staring through the curtains at me with utter astonishment at every change, whilst Ribster retained his meditative settled pose - obviously a new fan for the band!
You can tap your toes, but you really need to keep your ears focused ready to change pace! If you intend to dance along, you may want to play the CD through several times first - to save embarrassment at getting into a set of moves only to find the music suddenly changed below your dance!
The Bad Hand consists of Dan Brennan, Timothy Pizza and Matthew Zipkin, with Mike Reed. Further information about the band and their music can be found at www.thebadhand.com
