San Francisco Music Vibes of the 2000's PART ONE

July 23rd 2007 18:35
Today, I am going to post HALF of a chapter of the first book that I wrote. “SAN FRANCISCO MUSIC VIBES OF THE 2000’S” was released in 2005. I self-published this book due to the fact that the topic was not mainstream, and therefore the publishers which I initially contacted did not feel that it would be marketable. (Incidentally, I have sold more copies of this book, than of my other 6 titles!)

When I first took up the idea of becoming a writer, I decided that the first thing I would write about would be my favorite subject - today’s music scene in San Francisco. I contacted several of the district’s performers, each at varying stages in their career, and over half agreed to participate in an e-interview. I collected over two dozen of these across a time period of three months, and sandwiched the responses to the various questions between pieces of self-written text. I ended up with a book that I eventually took to a POD-printer. (A POD-printer is a service that prints each copy as it is ordered, therefore preventing the problem of too many, or too few, copies being produced.)

For anyone interested in previewing/purchasing this book, it is available for both download and hard copy at the following web-store: www.lulu.com/winterbear

CHAPTER THREE: THE VENUES.

Some musicians play at the same club regularly, whilst others go all
over the place amassing a following, or trying to. Some bands have yet
to perform for an audience, maybe having recently changed the line-up
and not yet having been sampled in the new formation, or having just
created a new band. I thought a good question to ask in order to find
out at what stage of recognition and availability musicians were, would

be how many places had they played at. This should give an idea of
which are the seasoned professionals and which are just starting out,
newly reformed, or hobby bands. I asked “How many different clubs have you played at?” eager to discover what stage each musician had reached with their performances, and if their music was reaching a small or large section of the population.

RYAN OF ABSENT MIND:
“Our current adaptation, we have only played 2 clubs.”
DAVE OF ASTRAL:
“More than I can remember.”
MIKE WELLS OF GRIDLOCK:
“Many over the West Coast, Canada, New York, Berlin, and other
spots.”
JAMES OF HWW:
“Oh man, I think we have played at about 10-15 different places in the
SF bay.”
ELIOT BISHOP OF KINGSTREET:
“We have lost track. You name it, we’ve probably played there,
especially in SF. To name a few highlights, Shoreline Amphitheater,
Slims, The Great American Music Hall, The Independent, The
Sweetwater Saloon, The Haight Street Fair Main Stage, The Viper
Room, The Cutting Room……………..”
CRIS OF LYP:
“We’ve played a pretty good variety of clubs in SF. Slim’s, Café Du
Nord, Rickshaw Stop, Thee Parkside, Bottom Of The Hill, Red Devil
Lounge, Mezzanine, 12 Galaxies, Hotel Utah, etc.”
MATTHEW OF LVR:
“Only like 4 different clubs.”
LOVE, HOPE & FEAR:
“About 50 all over Northern California.”
BRYAN BINDLOSS OF MADELIA:
“A whole mess.”
DON OF MIGGS:
“So many. We will play 160 plus dates across the country, easily, in
2005.”
IAN OF MY REVOLVER:
“I'm not sure, quite a lot though.”
ROY OF ORGANIK:
“0.”
MICHAEL NOBODY OF PISS & VINEGAR:
“About 6 SF venues so far.”
T.BIAS OF PLASTINATION:
“DNA Lounge, Cherry Bar, Red Devil Lounge, Pound SF, Studio Z,
Kimos, etc.”
DON OF SINISTER DEXTER:
“We've played 5 or 6 different clubs over the years.”
SPUTTERDOLL:
(Rio) “We've played many different clubs up and down the West Coast.”
(Bern) “Different clubs, bars, youth centers, can’t really count them.”
(Dennis) “I've totally lost count, too numerous to recall all of them off the
top of my head.”
STOO ODOM OF THE GRAVES BROTHERS DELUXE:
“Over a hundred worldwide. Most local venues.”
SCOTT COOPER OF THE SPECTERS:
“Maybe 5.”
MANO DIO GRACIAS OF THE WILDLIFE:
“Almost every club you can think of in San Francisco.”
