REVIEW: Mano Dio Gracias - Ray Tel's Greatest
March 3rd 2008 15:29
Offering six tracks, all written and performed by Mano Dio Gracias who also created the accompanying booklet, this 2007 release CD costs only $5, yet gives a unique experience of non-commercialized music. If top-40 music leaves you shuddering in disgust & you are searching for something that is different, interesting, original and requiring some contemplation, then this CD should be on your shopping list.
Clouds In Oakland combines soft tinkling and high trembling with a whirring. It comes across akin to the combination of an ice-cream van, 1970's ballad, & space-effects.
Flush starts and ends with a train whistle, filled by horse-plod beats leading into a gentle melody with clip-phasing and watery wobbles in the vox.
You've Been Hepburned continues the 'only one gal' theme with its click-intro, then twang and rattling rolls. Clarity of guitar recording and vocals is mixed with additional sound.
Spruce Goose starts with shakers and wobble. It then leads into soft acoustic vocal clarity sharing the ride with distorts on the guitar. It ends on a patch of dreamy spoken vocals.
Hell's Angel provides a well balanced blend of guitar and vox. As on all tracks, the lyrics are worth some thought.
HMS Christina blends guitar and vocals in a soft and drifty atmospheric ballad. This track is my personal favorite from the CD, which can be ordered along with its lyric booklet from Really Long Link
