OrgAniK, that San Francisco sound.
September 19th 2007 15:47
Organized and created by Roy McNeill and comprising of various additional performers, the San Francisco band OrgAniK has a happy sound that can catch your ears and lead you into wanting to hear much more. The band's music is based on acoustic instruments with natural sounds from live recordings being computer-added to produce a melodious, flowing, psychedelic sound.
Roy is a friendly fellow, who travels the world with his seemingly constant companion - a microphone! If you invite him along for a mountain hike for example, he will stop to record the birdcalls and animals in the bush at various moments during the trek. If you invite Roy to your house for a meal, he will spend time recording the chattering TV-radio and the squeaks from your exercise bike, along with consuming the food. All the sounds he accumulates are processed on his computer and added into the organic music of OrgAniK.
Available for purchase is his band's full length CD 'Grounded' an 8 track acoustic accomplishment, which includes samples of ocean waves pounding down upon the shore amongst other natural 'watery' offerings. Along with Roy's acoustic guitar, live-recordings, and several local friends' musical assistance, Lisa Donnelly provides vocals on the two tracks that have voice accompaniment, leaving the rest as pure music. The album was recorded, produced and engineered by Roy, the 'one man does most' of his band.
Roy has a strong connection to SF music, claiming that he will definitely still be playing in the area in the future. Roy declared, "If I were to become more popular and tour the world, I would only play smaller venues. I would like to keep an intimate vibe at all times. Plus the sound is usually better for everybody in the audience when the venue is right." Concerning the current scene, Roy said, "Cooperation is much more productive and much more inspiring than competition. The cooperation factor is very important for us to adopt as a global culture, and this is why I feel that the San Francisco music scene will be such a key part of our cultural evolution.” When asked about the future of music in the district, Roy responded, “I see the vibe of the late 60's coming back, but with a new wardrobe. Hopefully it’s leading to the same place that the original vibe had intended it to lead to, which is a musical revolution that in turn creates a positive societal revolution. The San Francisco music scene could be a very important player to the positive evolution of our global culture.” What lies ahead for his band? Roy asserted, "I have since been inspired to write more music that will shake the booty and get people moving."
Roy has a show in San Francisco on September 21 at Café Du Nord, where he also sometimes works as a sound engineer.
