Interview with Roy from Roy Two Thousand
May 16th 2008 18:11
SANDE: Have you performed recently, either as Organik or RTT?
ROY: Yes, I have been performing a lot lately as roy two thousand.. my most recent show was at Cafe du Nord, and I'm playing this Saturday in the Fillmore lounge. I've also got a new monthly at the Elbo Room - Hump Night - that will take off every first Wednesday, beginning June 4th.
SANDE: Tell me more about your latest project - 'Roy Two Thousand'…
ROY: roy two thousand is a live project that has been stirring around as an idea in my mind for many years. I went to a lot of raves and Grateful Dead shows in high school, and I always wanted to combine the DJ/musician elements. A DJ is similar to a jam band in the sense that they are both improvising with music, and they are both heavily feeding off the crowd during their sets. I've always loved that aspect, and I think that's why up to this date I spend as much time going to see live bands as I do DJ's. The crowd interaction is awesome! So with my current live setup, I can be a DJ and I can be a musician, and I can improvise and I can jam with other musicians.. and did I mention I can improvise? I need that in my performances.. I need to be able to see what the crowd wants and try to give it to them in a way they haven't heard it yet. So I can take a record everyone has heard, dub it out with my effects, loop it, bring in a new break from a different record, loop it, and then scratch an accapella over top of that.. then I can either mix in another record, or I can mix in one of my own beats. I have my beats synced with my looper, so once I have a beat going, I can go crazy with looping my guitars, bass, melodica, or breaks and samples from records. The possibilities are endless, and I'm having a lot of fun exploring!!
SANDE: Which show would you say has been your favorite, other than your own, from 2008 so far?
ROY: That's a tough call, there have been so many already.. I would have to say Peter Moren at the Swedish American Hall. Not only was it the most recent and most fresh in my mind, but also because I had never heard his music before, so the surprise element was in full effect. He was a great at everything he did - guitar, singing, performing.. and the music was awesome!
SANDE: In what direction do you see the music scene of SF currently heading?
ROY: Dubstep is really picking up. It's the new drug, and I must admit that I am quite addicted lately
I've been hearing lots of ideas in my head lately, and ultimately they sound a lot like genre-breeding. I love hearing a song with many different elements and more than one genre in it. I try to do that with my music as well.. for example, my first single 'can't stop' has a dubstep bassline, but also a lot of guitars.. so is it rock, or is it dubstep?
SANDE: If you had to list 5 'essential' albums, what would they be?
ROY: dark side of the moon
grateful dead - live dead
mad professor vs. massive attack - no protection
king tubby - meets rockers uptown
clue to kalo - come here when you sleepwalk
anything by dyke and the blazers
SANDE: What local bands do you suggest music fans check out, if they haven't already?
ROY: bands and one-man bands
tomihira
mophono
general fuzz
mochipet
honeycut
kush arora
ata ebtekar
to be continued..
