INTERVIEW WITH DAVE HAN (ASTRAL & FOREIGN CINEMA)

May 12th 2011 13:03
Q- What has been going on with Astral since the last release?
A- I’ve been taking time off from doing live shows for Astral so far this year and focusing more time on writing, recording, and doing shows for Foreign Cinema. In 2013, I will be releasing “Orchids Sessions” for the 10th anniversary release of “Orchids”. This album is composed of 10 studio outtakes that were recorded back when the album was being recorded that never made it on the album. They will be mixed down from the original master tapes, tracked by the original band members (Shawn Poh, Amy Rosenoff, and myself), and mixed by the same recording engineer who did Orchids. So it’ll be a nice treat for our fans.

Q- So many good bands in the area are fading out and splitting up - it is good to see Astral still going. How has the local scene been affected by all the old bands leaving and new bands forming?
A- Well, it is indeed in transition. It seems like not much significantly new is going on creatively. It’s almost like a regurgitation of the same sounds, but with different names. I’m a firm believer in change though, and I think something pretty interesting is bound to emerge sooner or later.

Q- What do you think Astral will have accomplished by the year 2020?
A- Oh, that’s too far to project! All I can say is that I plan to continue writing, recording, and performing music that I feel personally satisfied with and that I can share with those who can appreciate my music.

Q- I spotted a new vinyl release coming up - alas, I have no record player - but for those fans that do, tell us more!
A- We’re very excited about the new exclusive Foreign Cinema 7” single. It’s one of our newest songs titled “palace of fine junk” b/w an older tune, “velvet sky”. Palace has a very different arrangement from our other songs. The song has a downtempo, boomy traditional Japanese taiko drum line, accompanied by droney Indian sitar, so it has a very eastern, world music feel to it. The b-side is a lush dreamy track that has gotten a lot of positive response so far (it can be heard on Really Long Link

Q- Are there any tours coming up, or special shows?
A- Yes, Foreign Cinema is going to LA May 28th to perform at the Mindwaves Festival. Also we are in the process of planning release shows for the 7” and album. Yes, the album is right around the corner! We are making some final touches on that and it will be off to the mastering house shortly after.

You can find out more about Dave's 'second band' that seems to have been modified from an 'on the side' project into a main pathway for his musical talent at Really Long Link
