INTERVIEW with CAMDEN BARBOUR
October 29th 2009 18:28
Q: You were known to me as an avid Tubes collector & fan, and also as a poet - and then I spot you have been singing at the Hotel Utah! For how long have you been performing?
A: I have been interested in the theatre arts since I saw a play of James Thurber works when I was a kid. Then the Tubes came along and showed me both worlds, Theatre AND Rock. From the time I was 14 I wanted to be on the stage. I just didn't know how. I tried comedy for a long time, but that is impossible to become good at without an audience. I switched to performing my own silly songs about three years ago and have only been performing them for about 10 months. Prior to that I had hosted comedy shows and done a few small open mic type things.
Q: Is the singing a new phase for Camden or just a hobby coming out of the closet?
A: I figure if Leonard Cohen can do it, I can do it. I have always wanted to express myself in music and on the stage.
Q: What genre or style is your music?
A: I like to think of it as Punk-rock Crooner, kind of like Jackson Brown Meets Johnny Thunders.
Q: Where can people hear your music if they are interested?
A: Well, I have a few songs on Myspace (CB Radio and his Dashboard Speakers) but most of them are on the Hotel Utah site (Camden Barbour).
You can see the video of my song, Ballad of the TV Judge on YouTube (Camden Barbour)
A: I love to play live and look forward to performing where ever they let will let me.
Q: Which local performers and bands do you recommend music fans take a listen to?
A: The Hotel Utah has so many talented and wonderful performers, you really can't go wrong with anyone that hangs out there.
There is someone for everyone there. From the wacky to the soulful, it's at the Hotel Utah.
Q: Is there a venue in San Francisco that you would really love to play at?
A: That is a toss up between Winterland and Speedway Meadows!
