EP REVIEW: The Union Trade - Why We Need Night - 2011
February 10th 2011 18:28
Why we need night - starting with the longest track, this CD opens with gentle rolling music leading into a harmonic piano-vocal duet before being surrounded and carried through by the rest of the band and song.
Headlands - melody and vocals blend into a calming audio experience. You cannot drift off to sleep though, as the drums bounce you back just when you mellow out into the sound. A beautiful drumful end fades the song out.
Hawk vs. crow - the shortest track opens with piano cascades encouraging you to sway along to this instrumental.
This is what happens - starts with a rockier intro that leads into the collection’s vocal centerpiece.
Aurelia - ending with an electro-style intro track that you may recall from Tricycle Records’ recent 10-piece compilation, this is the track that made me want to buy the CD just a day after it came out.
The band lists their music as ‘Rock, Post-Rock, Shoegaze’ and has been on the local scene since 2007. It comprises of four members covering guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Definitely worth taste-testing if you haven’t already. You can find the EP at their website - http://www.theuniontrade.com/
