CHANGE IN THE NEON LIGHT REVIEW
May 28th 2010 04:36
Finally, I am online @ home again and can post more interesting items than concert date lists - such as a review of the latest Veil Veil Vanish offering - CHANGE IN THE NEON LIGHT.
CHANGE IN THE NEON LIGHT
The title track is first up and the longest in duration. It opens with Astral-style drums played across a Madelia-style whine. (Ahem, please forgive my addiction to local music - I do not play commercial stuff to relate to 'well known' bands.) You know it is Veil Veil Vanish for sure as soon as the vox kick in though. It slowly fades out leaving you happy to know you have plenty more to come.
ANTHEM FOR A DOOMED YOUTH
The second track begins with a distorted thud-bass aspect. It soon opens into a typical VVV offering. Play this song just a few times and you will be joining Keven to sing the chorus. I would love to hear this track played live.
EXILE CITY
I had to replay the third track several times before I could stop bopping about and focus on the words. If you also get lost dancing in the sound and only tune-in to the words of the chorus, you might want to check these lyrics out in the CD booklet after. Somewhat melancholic but facing a general reality.
MODERN LUST
I have selected the fourth track as a personal fav. The idea contained in the lyrics seems to cover my attitude from age 20 through 40. Another song that won't take you long to singalongaKev on the chorus. "I can't dance alone" - ho hum - whilst playing this track it would be difficult for anyone to resist dancing. (Luckily my current computer chair is hard and wooden - so much safer to dance in - or this track might bust this chair in the same way I broke my old typing chair bopping along to those Paradise Boys…)
PHARMECEUTICAL PARTY PLATFORM
The shortest track is next up. Robert's drumming comes over prominently in the fast-beat intro - until the lyrics hold your attention and soon you are singing along to the chorus and sway-bopping again. Another gloomy taste of veracity underlies the infectious melody.
SECONDHAND DAYLIGHT
This would easily slip into my top place song if there were not already two songs to squeeze into that spot! This is another song I would really like to hear played live sometime. Drifts me off into memories of strolling along the city mall in the early hours of a Sunday morning…
THIS IS VIOLET
Strong starting, this power-beat bounce-n-roll track offers lyrics that take some contemplation and offer several options. Based on the sound alone, this might end up my chosen fav - but I am fussy; I pick my favs on lyrics and music combined and although I can ramble in lyrical alternatives, none stand out as hitting me personally.
DETACHMENT
The penultimate track is the second longest song and my second fav. The vox rest on a bed of deep melodic resonance to hold the tune in your heart n head for ages after it's stilled. I cannot help but smile as the song mentions bats - an old nickname of mine being bat due to a teenage addiction to bell-ringing.
THE WILDERNESS
There is a stormy and bare entry into the final track - depictive of the song title. It picks up into a shuffle and slide and then tinkles and rolls onward - the vox tying it all together. The closing sounds are highly effective.
The CD package/booklet contains all the info you need including the lyrics and multiple ta's. It also contains websites for both the band and Metropolis Records. It is definitely worth your money to purchase this play-often album with a bonus 5-track 'remix' CD.
