The intro…
Whether you call their genre Alt-Rock, Gothic, Indie, Shoegaze, Emo-Goth, or Dance-Trance, MADELIA is a band that has a distinctive atmospheric sound. Often described as sounding akin to The Cure & My Bloody Valentine, MADELIA plays original music for a inimitable experience.
Practicing at Secret Studios on Cesar Chavez, MADELIA have been performing live concerts in the San Francisco environs since January of 2002. Most of the popular venues in town have hosted at least one MADELIA show - CDN, DNA Lounge, Club ID (Rickshaw Stop), The Elbo Room, BOTH, 12 Galaxies, etc… MADELIA have also played shows in LA, and for the South By Southwest festival in Austin.
The fame…
'The Compliment' was played on local station LIVE 105 FM, as well as being selected for a Bay Area compilation CD. 'Wither' has also received radio play credit with this station. Their song 'Cherry' was entered in the 2006 Not So Silent Night contest.
MADELIA released a self-titled debut album in 2006, following their three EP releases that surfaced between 2001 and 2004. General reviews of the LP were given by SF Bay Guardian, West Coast Performer, The Owl Mag and Aquarius records. These can be read from the band's main website on their news page. In the past…
With a reputation for seductive entrancement and empathy amidst gloom, MADELIA were more than just a unique sound, with sexy vocalization, well-blended instrumentation, and top of the class lyrical talent; they additionally portray an aura of excitement and a cultural-image attitude - basically, a complete entertainment package. Just watch their video for 'Vacancy' to observe the way the whole band plays in unification: the way they dip in sync, that 'there but not there' look in Andrew's eyes as he glides upon the stage with his bass, the way Bryan captures your heart as he combines dipping his eyes with singing the word 'follow' knowing that he has you drooling, the way Ralph bursts in with his drum sequence, rolling wild whilst sitting in vertical perfection, the way Jennifer slides her hips in time to the rhythm, the way Trevor puts his whole body into the performance, and the way Ben just sits and plays, a part of everything yet totally concentrated on his own portion…
Former members Ralph de la Rosa (drums), Jennifer Kuca (keyboards/synth), Trevor Stearns (guitar/synth), and Benjamin Chapman (piano/keyboards) have now left the band.
In the future…
MADELIA resurface in May 2008, following a major line-up change. MADELIA currently consists of original members Bryan Bindloss (lyrics/vocals/guitar) and Andrew Burmester (bass/vocals), along with Boone Spooner who joined the band in 2005 (drums/vocals), and recent newcomer Rachel Hoiem (electric piano & organ) who previously played for local band Lolita. MADELIA have also added a guest violinist, 'Miss Anne' for their latest song.
