April interview with Dave of Astral
April 1st 2010 08:14
Q: Another 4-track taste-tester from Astral probably means a new album close on it's heels - any news about a release date yet?
A: Indeed! And it’s about time! We’re looking at Summer 2010. No exact date yet.
Q: What can you tell me about the upcoming album...?
A: It will feature 10 songs recorded over the last couple years since the release of our last full length album, Sleepwalker. Some of the songs will be familiar to those who frequent the myspace page or have been coming out to our shows. We’ve been rotating teasers on the myspace now and then and have been getting a positive response so we’re really excited about finally getting this one out there.
Q: I spotted another new name in the EP line-up - has the band changed again?
A: Would you be referring to Paul? He was our bass player for a short period in 2007 and later took on the role of recording engineer for the album. Our current bass player is Sam Black who is a returning alumni of the band from around 2006.
Q: Do you have any tours or special concerts coming up that you would like to let your fans know about?
A: We are planning to put together a Vibraphone Records showcase/ release party July 22 at Bottom of the Hill in SF. A few of the other bands on the label will have new releases coming out at that time as well. To stay on the up and up, I’d suggest folks to drop by the myspace page time to time for updates on when and where all future shows, news, releases, etc.
Q: Wherever I go, when I talk about music nobody seems to know of the many talented bands from San Francisco - only commercial top forty bands - do you have a take on this?
A: Usually (and unfortunately) that’s the case. There are a lot talented bands out there that are only known by word of mouth. It’s a tough climb, with respect to the music business side of things, which go hand in hand with increasing exposure and broadening your network. Level of exposure is more of a function of business more so than artistic integrity.
Q: What music do you go out to hear when you are not playing in your own band?
A: I am a huge fan of Brazilian jazz and Brazilian music in general. I try to go to shows whenever I get a chance. I am looking forward to seeing Ceu and Caetano Veloso next month. I think maybe subconsciously, I try to listen to new and different music to keep my creative edge fresh. There isn’t much to learn much if you’re always listening to a similar style of music that you’re already creating.
Q: Where is the best place for Astral fans to keep in touch with what is going on at the moment?
A: The best place is still the Astral myspace page www.myspace.com/astral and also Vibraphone Records www.vibraphonerecords.com
